Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
