A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
