Sam Fender has donated the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which works to save the Britain's small music venues.

Fender was awarded the prize on 16 October as his new release the album was declared the top album of the past year.

Fender has decided to hand the money over to the trust, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues had in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the area, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported venues that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues received financial assistance in upgrading amenities and gear that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The idea that money from concerts in large arenas backs the independent spots, where it begins for musicians like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has commented.
